Room temperature guide

Bedtime is not about maximum warmth, but how to balance warmth, breathability and layers by room temperature.

The comfortable range

Most guidance places a comfortable nursery between 16 °C and 20 °C. In the first months babies cannot fully regulate their own body temperature and are often warmer at night than parents realise. That is why, it is so important to avoid overheating while creating a safe, comfortable sleep environment.

Check the back of your baby's neck rather than hands or feet. Warm and dry is right; damp or hot means one layer too many.

Layering by room temperature

Our four-layer muslin sleeping bag is made for rooms of 18 °C and above and can be worn all year, not only in summer. Below that, keep the same bag and change what goes underneath.

  • 20 °C and above, short-sleeve bodysuit only
  • 18 to 20 °C, long-sleeve bodysuit
  • 16 to 18 °C, long-sleeve bodysuit plus light pyjamas
  • Below 16 °C, pyjamas plus a warmer top layer, and check the neck more often

Loose blankets and duvets

A wearable sleeping bag stays put; a loose blanket does not. That is the practical reason sleep guidance favours sleeping bags for the first year, and why we only recommend our down duvet once a child has moved into a toddler bed.
